Recipe from random blackberry farm lady
By Carrie | August 4, 2008
While visiting the rents in Concord a few weekends ago, we had to go blackberry picking at Summerberry farm. We sort of have a personal connection with this farm because one of the kids of the owners rode my mom’s bus. (OK that’s a big sort of, but at least this way we know where it is!)
Anyway, when we showed up these two women were lugging their huge bounty of freshly picked blackberries, quite proud of themselves. It was a 50-something woman and her mother. They gushed on about how wonderful the blackberries were, about how even though it’s the end of the season we’ll still find plenty to pick, etc etc. Somehow the topic came up of what exactly they were doing with 6 pints of blackberries. Apparently, you make cobbler. Well duh! We were thinking a tart or something to that effect, but cobbler is so much easier!!! And, the fact that we have it written on a scrap of paper that was in one of their purses makes it so much cooler. The back has something crossed out that says “Crime Beat - true” — no idea what that means. Maybe these ladies are in some covert crime fighting organization. Mom claims that these two are us in about 30 years. I hope so! They were happening ladies!
So, here’s the recipe. We tried it, and it’s delicious!
Blackberry picking ladies’ recipe for blackberry cobbler
8×8 glass pan
Grease dish
Put 4 cups berries in - put 1tbls lemon juice over -
Mix in bowl 1 cup flower - 1 cup sugar - 1 egg until looks like coarse meal
Sprinkle over berries
Drizzle 6 tbs butter over all
Bake 35 min - 375 degrees
Try it and let me know what you think! This whole thing inspired us to go through some of the old family recipes my mom has sitting in her recipe box. Stay tuned for awesome dishes from the 70s!

Carrie forgot to mention that we grabbed a recipe from Blackberry farm also. We tried both recipes and the recipe above from the random lady was the superior cobbler.

This was such a fun time. I was shocked to hear about “tiggers” I think is what they are called and the reasoning behind those women wearing their socks only to pick berries! Hopefully my resource, one of my co-workers, will post a comment telling you about it all. I just about freaked out. I think that this berry farm is much more modernized and probably there is a lot less chance of getting those “bugs in your skin” ewwwwwwww, but she sure had an interesting story about them that I asked her to pass on you you. We will see. lol

Hey Carrie,
My name is Sabrina and I work with your mother. By the way she is one of the most wonderful people I have ever met. She always puts a smile on my face.
Anyway I wanted to let you know about the “tiggers”. First of all there not “tiggers”. These little critters are called chiggers or some people call them jiggers. In the south almost anyone will know what you are talking about unless you call them “tiggers”. Ha! Ha! Ha!
Our conversation started when your mom was telling me and Lesley (another co-worker)about the recipe you got while picking black berries, and I told your mom that the next time you make a cobbler try cutting some cream cheese up in small chunks and sprinkle over the top of your berrries or your peaches. Then our conversation went on to the women you saw picking berries with the socks on. I told Carolyn that most people when they pick black berries will put turpinetine or kerosene on their socks or tie a piece of cloth around their wrists to keep from getting chiggers. Chiggers live on black berries, and are found in pine thickets in the woods. If you ask my son he could give you a detailed description of the little bugers.
This sounds really strange but if you get chiggers you paint the top of your skin where the chigger is with fingernail polish and this will usually kill them. Tyler looked like he had the chicken pox not chiggers (all I had at the time was a dark pink nail polish).
I love your website. I will keep checking it for more recipes. I also hear you have started canning. My husband and I can everything we can.
Try making black berry preserves. Freezer preserves are the best and easiest especially strawberry.
Your moms friend,
Sabrina

Hi Sabrina,
Thanks for stopping by!! I had no idea what “tiggers” were either but figured they were some crazy southern bug I hadn’t heard of. I have heard of chiggers though, but haven’t encountered them - only some ticks last month when we were in the mountains. Well, now I know how to get rid of them and now I have an excuse to travel with nail polish!!! hahaha.
We will have to try the cream cheese trick in the cobbler. Sounds yummy. I will prod Oak to post some of his canning recipes. So far the best things he has made are beets and okra. We made strawberry preserves last year but still have some left over - we don’t eat enough toast and pb&j’s to get through it all! Do you have any good canning recipes to pass on?
Good luck with getting ready to start the school year — mom says it’s a madhouse there!
