Charlotte finds

By Carrie | February 1, 2008

Well, we didn’t see the Taj Mahal when we were in India, but we did just recently visit the Taj MaTeeter. For those of you without North Carolina roots, Harris Teeter is about as close as we get to a high quality, but not quite upscale grocery store. (Think Wegmans, or, as I have heard, Publixx to you uber southern folks.) Oak somehow heard about this Taj MaTeeter experience online and when we visited the rents, we made them take the 40 minute drive with us to check it out.

And boy, it was impressive. The normal “prepared foods” area had not only a salad bar, but two entire hot lines of different ready to eat goodies. You could also get pasta made to order with your choice of sauces and additions for only $4. A “bread consultant” was ready and waiting to advise on bread choices and freshly slice bread. This area was seriously twice the size of the similar area in our Whole Foods. The only thing I noticed was that there was no place to eat if you wanted. Apparently you cannot dine in at the Taj Mateeter.

penguin_drivein.jpgWe didn’t dine in either, because we had just eaten a glorious meal at the Penguin drive-in. I think I had the best burger of my life there. It was so juicy and flavorful - the only downfall was that the wimpy ass bun that it came in. It was meant to hold a single 1/4 pound patty, not a half pound of burger goodness. We learned even if you get the 1 pound sandwich, you get the same wimpy bun. So buyer beware. Totally worth the drive though!
