Yesterday Oak, Alex, and I all spent the day in New York. It was mostly a culinary tour – where way too much food consumed!!! haha. We went to Max Brenner, 2nd Ave deli, Pommes Frites, Mamouns, and Jacques Torres.
Rockefeller Center was insane!!! But I was glad to finally get a peek at the big tree!! Our picture are up on flickr. Happy Holidays!
Well, after the glitter pumpkin experience at Halloween, I was addicted to Martha Stewart glitter. The December issue of Blueprint (soon to be defunct, *sob*) had this glitter candle idea. And, all I could think was — yes.. more glitter.
So, among all of the other handmade gifts from this year (most of which I didn’t get a picture… whoops), I made these glitter candles. I used mod podge instead of spray adhesive… I also put a layer on top of the glitter to hopefully prevent some shedding. We shall see. Now, hopefully they aren’t a fire hazard…. hopefully the blueprint people tested this out for me already..
In high school, I was pretty sure I was one of the biggest geeks around. Then I went to college and learned the vast reality of uber-geekiness: Dungeons and Dragons, long black trenchcoats, and the wonderful world of online gaming – in which you play the game at your computer while shouting down the hall to other people who are playing the game with you. Wonderful. I realized I wasn’t so much of a geek after all (of course, I think this is mostly the result of being surrounded by engineering majors).
But now, I realize that everyone’s a geek in some way. Take a look at this poster, and you’ll realize that you probably at least somewhat fit into at least one of the geek categories. Am I geeky for knowing what some of the geekier geeks are? Knowing isn’t being.. that’s what I’ll tell myself.
So, the participatory item for the week: Share which geek you are!!! (I’ll share mine in the comments so you can look at the poster first!)
So, we had a nice relaxing Thanksgiving this year, and I finally have the photo evidence up. What wasn’t photographed was the amazing stuffing that we made from the November 2007 issue of Everyday food – nice and simple, made out of Oak’s homemade ciabatta bread. Yum.
Later that evening we went to see Fred Claus and played almost too much Scrabble (I did actually win a game — woohoo!). We ended up purchasing the official Scrabble dictionary to put an end, once and for all, to the words that are and are not allowed to be used in the game. For those of you that were wondering, most middle English words are allowed – so go ahead and use “ye”. On Black Friday/Saturday we did the obligatory shopping – but not any of that getting up at 4am stuff. Craziness!
So, tonight the Cake Mix Doctor herself was visiting the Barnes and Noble in Cary. I dragged Oak along with my much-loved copy of the Cake Mix Doctor cookbook. While Oak spends hours laboring over Martha’s baked creations, when we need a quick weeknight baked good, Cake Mix Doctor always comes to the rescue. Plus, her cupcake book is pretty good (especially the muffins! They are “cupcake cousins” you know.).
She is on tour promoting her new book – the What Can I bring? cookbook. I’m still mulling it over, but it seems promising for all of the potlucks we have at the office, where “fruit salad” and “a pile of something or other from Bojangles” seems all too common. A few of the Barnes and Noble employees even made recipes from the book for the event, but apparently “food codes” did not allow them to serve the goodies, so we got stale cookies from the Barnes and Noble cafe instead. Le sigh. I suppose it’s better than nothing! Apparently the B&N cafe workers need to purchase this book.
