I have been seeing an abnormally large number of scrunchies lately. For the guys or the fashionally uniformed — I am referring those hair elastics that are covered in fabric that were fasionable in the early to mid 1990s.

So, yes. I thought that scrunchies have been socially (or fashionably) unacceptable for at least the past 5 years. Am I off on this? My personal scrunchy collection hangs in my closet but hasn’t been touched for quite some time… and I wore them past their prime as well.

There was even a Sex and the City episode in which they explained that you could tell if the person was from New York by the presence or absence of a scrunchy. Perhaps this news has not travelled this far south yet… I am getting tempted to write to Samantha Thompson Smith (the fashion editor of the local paper, the News and Observer) to tell her to broadcast that all scrunchies should be discarded or put in the back of the closet immediately.
