To all ghosts and goblins : Happy Halloween!
Tonight will be spent on Franklin St. in Chapel Hill, NC. It’ll be crazy times.
I wonder if you can trick-or-treat for free booze. What a concept that’d be.
P.S. This is the pumpkin that Oak and I carved for halloween! Isn’t it hot ?
LJC mentioned a famous Rochester restaurant, The Dinosaur, and I got all Rochester-cuisine nostalgic. Not that the Dinosaur’s BBQ can top any barbecque here – hello, this is barbecque country! It may be the hour but I was remembering Nick Tahou’s Hots.
Yes, that’s a HOT.. not a hot dog. So you walk into Nick’s, ask for a hot and a pop and you get no grief. Try that anywhere else outside of western NY. I remember going there several times as a little kid and getting a hot dog and chocolate milk (a great combination). Always Lyell Ave. though…. to this day I feel I am forbidden to go to the Main St. location. Unfortunately through my teen years I missed out on the Nick’s action, but finally went there and got a famous garbage plate a few years ago. So yum-may, but soo bad.. aaaah!
Garbage plates are what they sound. Anything on the menu, you can get in your garbage plate. (visual aid here) No need to use the little section thingys in the foam container… it’s no fun if it doesn’t mix around a little bit!!! I think i can only stomach french fries, meat (cheeseburger prefereably), and the meat hot sauce. (Meat you ask? Yes, meat. Who can argue with more meat?) The best part is that I have found a recipe! I’m sure it doesn’t quite duplicate the secret recipe, but it’s a shot. I’m wondering where you get triple ground beef though.
Another interesting fact : my family has ties to the Tahous. My grandfather owned a gas station, and I believe Alex Tahou used to work at the station. (somethin’ like that) Tricky huh? Alex Tahou (Nick’s son) was at my grandfather’s funeral, Nick himself woulda been there too had he not passed away the year before.
So I have family ties to Rochesterian heros. Does that make me famous?

The Oklahoma! play set!
Who wants to play? I get to be Gertie. She had the bling-bling.
Lesson learned from this post: The farmer and the cowman should be friends. They’ve even replaced Hammerstein’s beautiful lyrics to fit our modern lifestyles. Now why don’t they mention the Information Developer? Whatever.
I apologize if you are not familiar with this fine moo-see-call. Study up!
I accidentally ommitted an important part of the weekend - Bowling for Soup at Lincoln Theatre. I picked out their CD for free on BMG – and lo and behold, they come here to Raleigh. Had fun rockin’ out front row center.
The thing about being in the front row is the crazy people trying to grope the band members. Yikes. It’s even scarier when it’s a 6-foot tall dude trying to do so. Good thing the random half-naked Asian guy was there for protection! I wonder how I survived getting mauled when I caught Chris, the lead guitarist’s guitar pick. The thing about being really punk was that I was sore the next day. It’s obvious I am too old to be a real punk. Ah well.
Another hectic traveling weekend! This weekend was off to Virginia Beach for Keith and Heather’s wedding.
First though, on Friday we got their gift and saw Finding Nemo at Raleighwood Cinema and Grill. It is so fun to eat a dinner and watch a movie! Plus I’ve been dying to see Finding Nemo. It was highly entertaining and makes me want to go diving in the Great Barrier Reef. Ah, one day, one day.
The wedding on Saturday, then before we left on Sunday went to Norfolk Botanical Garden. Took lots of purdy flower pictures! Went on a tram tour of it too. It would be awesome to be there in May when everything is in bloom. Still, the rose garden was producing flowers of many colors! Hot!
We rounded out the trip with a lunch at K&W Norfolk (where else?). I think Oak’s goal is to hit every K&W. (Not hard considering they are only in Virginia, North and South Carolina). We’ll see.
I’m getting excited about Halloween. Trying to restrain myself from buying Halloween candy because I will surely eat it all before any Trick-or-treaters make it. We did get a cool Halloween candy bowl at Wal-mart. Hot stuff. I want to carve fancy pumpkins with templates though we don’t have much of a door stoop to put them on.
Time to watch Jamie’s Kitchen. A cooking reality show. What next? I have to take notes for Oak since he is gone to NY for the weekend. He’s missing good TV here! D’oh!
Nothing terribly interesting here. My aunt visited this weekend, and Oak and I showed her a few of the triangle-area sites. We went to Franklin St. in Chapel Hill, and the NC Botanical Gardens (we especially enjoyed the many sculptures). Had some real southern fare at K&W and Red Hot and Blue. Yummy!
I am getting kind of sick of the frisbee. I played good defense and actually caught the disc and passed it successfully (big achievement on my part). However, we lost despite my wonderous effort. *sob*. I have learned a lot about ultimate though and I’m looking forward to playing for fun but actually knowing what I’m doing. The whole scoring – we gotta win-thing makes the game a lot less fun for me. Too nerve-racking!
No exciting action at work. Of course all of it is *IBM Confidential anyway. My African violet at work has lost all its flowers, so I got some plant food so hopefully it will grow flowers again soon. Apparently this is typical violet behavior. We shall see.
I have lots of pictures to post, but no energy to do so. Someday though! Oak and I got invited to our neighbors’ wedding in Virginia beach so a road trip is in order! Yahoo!
Alas! The white team ended the regular season 9-1. It didn’t help that the silly ‘ol blue team had about twice as many people as us for the last game. Grrr! haha. But championships start soon! eek!
Fall always seems to make my allergies go beserk, and it seems that it’s also the case here in North Carolina. It’s also *cold* here, highs of about 60 degrees. So New Yorkers, it’s really not any warmer here at this juncture.
Been decorating the apartment almost constantly lately. The ikea stuff is definitely making it more homey, along with the hot new furniture. Oak and I are still working on the perfect pieces for the walls – we got one for the dining room at Big Lots yesterday for only $10! Score. Should have gotten the HUGE flower canvas from Ikea for above the loveseat. Now we just have to find an excuse to make the road trip again.
hehehe.
The TV cart situation is pretty annoying. The cart we wanted at Ikea was sold out. So yesterday at Walmart, we bought one that we *thought* rotated. Well, it rotates but only about 4″ to each side. WHATEVER! I guess we need to get what we originally planned, one with wheels on the bottom. Poor Oak has to take the one we bought apart so we can return it.
Before and After pictures coming someday soon! (For the living room, anyway!)
